Since 2021, FIS has partnered with the nature-tech company Space Intelligence to explore how satellite technology can support the seafood industry. Space Intelligence have produced a series of reports (see here), discussing how satellites and remote sensing can quantify the impacts of illegal and unregulated fishing, estimate carbon emissions from single fishing vessels, and monitor the ocean carbon cycle.

In the past year, the space industry has grown at a remarkable pace, with satellites becoming small and lighter – enabling them to be deployed more efficiently and affordably. We’ve seen maritime-specific technology launched, and significant developments around connectivity at sea.

This latest update discusses how by harnessing satellite technology, we have the opportunity to make the fishing industry more sustainable, transparent, and safe.
